Monday’s high schools: Amherst tops Minnechaug in opener

Six players scored at least five points as the Amherst Regional boys basketball team opened the season with a 78-69 win over Minnechaug in Wilbraham Monday.
Noris Cuevas-Nova and James Sowers each had 18 points, while Justin Carey added 10 points and Malik Ford (10 rebounds) nine to pace the Hurricanes (1-0).
Amherst outrebounded the Falcons (0-1) 38-26, collected 16 assists and eight blocked shots.
Lance Hill struck for 35 points and became the program’s all-time leading scorer at Minnechaug.
Smith Academy 86, Pioneer Regional 42 — The Falcons (1-0, 1-0 Hampshire West) had four players score in double figures in the season-opening victory in Northfield.
Derek McMahon scored 20 points with eight assists and seven steals. Mat Sulda put in a game-high 19 points, while David Longstreeth added 11 and Keith Natale 10. Seaver Rickert (eight points) pulled down a team-best 14 rebounds.
Granby 85, Renaissance 70 — The Rams (2-0) knocked down 12 3-pointers, including a school record eight by Andy Gifford, in the win in Springfield.
Gifford had a career-high 29 points, while Corey Baker had 27 and Jesse Molin added 12.
Easthampton 54, Mohawk 46 — Freshmen Shaheim Torres and Dakota Wheeler each scored career highs as the Eagles (2-0, 1-0 Hampshire East) won their home opener.
Wheeler had 17 points, while Torres had 10 points, five assists and four steals.
Chris Starcun continued his strong start to the season with 13 points and eight rebounds. Sam Garcia added nine points and nine rebounds.
Monson 69, Belchertown 55 — The Orioles (1-1) took a one-point lead into the final quarter, but were outscored 23-8 over the last eight minutes in the road loss.
Zach Parsons notched a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds for Belchertown.
Tyler Verville added 16 points in the loss.
Ware 59, Hampshire 54 — Shane Andrews had 21 points and seven assists, and Conor Cronin added five points and 15 rebounds but the Raiders (0-1) dropped their opener at home.
Adam Laroche had 14 points for Hampshire.
Palmer 70, Gateway Regional 47 — After the Gators cut their deficit to four points at halftime, the Panthers pulled away in the second half.
Calvin Dowers led Gateway (0-2) with 14 points. Curtis Dowers added 13 and Justin Edinger had 11.
Mahar Regional 53, Frontier Regional 46 — The Senators outscored the Red Hawks 17-8 in the fourth quarter as Frontier dropped its season opener in a back-and-forth game in South Deerfield.
Paul Decker had 15 points for the Red Hawks (0-1, 0-1 Hampshire League), while Peter Watroba added 12.
Turners Falls 71, Hopkins Academy 38 — Greg Pipczynski scored a team-high 19 points for the Golden Hawks (1-1, 0-1 Hampshire West) in the home loss.
Brett Morrison added seven points for Hopkins.
Southwick 60, Holyoke Catholic 46 — Nick Limoges had 10 points but the Gaels (2-0) fell on the road.

Westminster 78, Williston 49 — Despite Tyonne Malone’s 15 points, the Wildcats fell to 3-2.
