Woman, 19, struck in crosswalk in Amherst

Jenna Rose Bankey, of Newport, R.I., was walking with several other people in the area of 995 North Pleasant St. near Crestview Apartments at 5:23 p.m. when a Toyota Corolla driven by Jacqueline Anne Dibella, 21, of Needham, struck her, police said.

The force of the collision caused Bankey to land on the hood and then windshield of the vehicle, which shattered, before she was thrown onto the ground a few feet away from the crosswalk, police said.

Though Bankey complained of severe pain throughout her body, and was brought by Amherst Fire Department ambulance to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, she was treated and released, less than five hours later, with only contusions and no broken bones or head injuries, police said.

Dibella was not speeding in the 35-mile-per-hour zone and told police she was not distracted by a cellphone or any electronic devices, according to police. She was issued a citation for failure to stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk, police said.
