‘Not my president’ view inches toward sedition

To the editor:

I respect Jay Fleitman for all the good he does in his profession of pulmonology, for all the wonderful volunteer work he has done for our schools and our community and — despite my disagreement with many of his political-economic views — for his courage to stand up for what is clearly a minority and hugely unpopular conservative viewpoint in our liberal community.

All of that said, I think he should hang his head with shame and put on the sackcloth of silence for his remarks in Tuesday’s Gazette that “Obama is not my president and the senators and congressmen from Massachusetts are not my representatives.”

I’m sorry, Jay. That’s disloyal. That’s un-American.

If anybody should know it, he should, that the liberty and the freedom of thought and expression which he enjoys as an American citizen and of which he is such an ardent spokesman hinges absolutely on a covenant to which all citizens are intrinsically bound: that we owe the office and person of the elected president and the office and persons of our elected representatives — and here, for Jay’s sake, we really need to underline that little word “elected” — our fundamental loyalty and obedience.

Without this anchor, criticism ceases to be criticism and starts to inch towards sedition. Until the next election, Jay, please do not show such disrespect to the democratic structure of governance under whose great protective wing you speak your mind.

Judson Brown
