A salute to brave women of conscience

To the editor:

I was surprised and dismayed to see no coverage in last Wednesday’s paper of the trial and conviction of six local women, members of the Shut It Down Affinity Group, for their civil disobedience (unlawful trespass) at the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant in Vernon. When people feel driven by their conscience to protest the continued operation of a nuclear plant that threatens all of us it deserves some attention.

I used to believe that nuclear power was both necessary and possible. But I have come to regard nuclear power generation as more than a safety issue. If you are worried about the effect on future generations of piling up more national debt, how can you fail to be worried about piling up nuclear waste that for all intents and purposes will remain lethal to all living creatures forever?

From the perspective of care for the planet we live on, it is a great gift to us that there are women of conscience willing to alert the rest of us by their act of disobedience. I look forward to seeing more discussion of this issue in your paper.
