Fitchburg driver indicted for punching pedestrian
FITCHBURG (AP) — A grand jury has indicted a Fitchburg man accused of punching a pedestrian who had yelled at him for driving too fast, a blow that led to the man’s death.
Prosecutors tell The Sentinel & Enterprise that 51-year-old Glenn Lowell was indicted on charges of manslaughter and assault and battery causing serious bodily injury.
An arraignment date has not been scheduled.
Authorities say 50-year-old Gregory Spyropoulos was crossing a street in June when he yelled at Lowell for driving too fast.
Police say Lowell stopped, got out and punched Spyropoulos, who fell to the ground and suffered a head injury. He died at a hospital three days later. Lowell surrendered to police after reading about Spyropoulos’ death and has expressed remorse, saying Spyropoulos threw the first punch.
