Pedestrians escape serious injuries in Northampton, Easthampton incidents
NORTHAMPTON — Less than 24 hours after officials heard safety concerns about one city crosswalk, a pedestrian was struck at another one Wednesday evening.
Detailed information about the accident was not available from police, but they did say occurred about 6:30 p.m. on Old South Street, was “extremely minor” and the pedestrian refused medical treatment.
A hearing of the Transportation and Parking Commission met Tuesday in the wake of the death of Hatfield doctor Pallav K. Parakh, 35, who was struck while using a crosswalk on New South Street just before 5 p.m. on Oct. 31.
Parakh succumbed to his injuries and died eleven days later. Derek J. Graves, 25, of 174 East St., Chesterfield, now faces a charge of negligent vehicular homicide.
Meanwhile, Easthampton police have brought charges against a Bridgeport, Conn., woman who allegedly struck a pedestrian and a utility pole late Saturday night.
The pedestrian, V.J. MacDonald-Moors, 18, of 9 Harold St., Northampton, was treated and released from Cooley Dickinson Hospital following the accident at 11:40 p.m.
Police Sgt. Bruce Nicol said Shatiqua L. Valentine, 19, was backing out of the driveway at 99 Maple St. when she struck MacDonald-Moors. She continued to back across the street and hit a utility pole before driving away, he said.
When police arrived, MacDonald-Moors was sitting up on the ground, Nicol said.
Valentine will face charges of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and failing to use care when backing.
