WHAT YOU DO: I perform customized facials for each individual’s skin type and condition. The facials consist of deep cleansing, exfoliation, steam, extraction of impurities and soothing facial massage. My facials always include a foot massage. I provide a series of glycolic or lactic chemical peels, and I also wax eyebrows.
EXPERIENCE: I have always been a nurturer, and I receive great joy from helping people feel good about who they are and how they look. Skin care was a natural path for me. I have worked at several local spas and then decided to open my own business for skin care in 2007. My success is due to the fact that I love my work. My clientele are all different ages and skin conditions.
THE MARKET: Women and men who want to improve the condition of their skin and understand the benefits of skin care.
HOW YOU REACH OUT TO IT: Through my other practice in massage therapy, referrals, my website and an occasional advertisement.
WHAT FINANCING HURDLES HAVE YOU FACED AND HOW HAVE YOU HANDLED THEM? I have not had any financing hurdles. I had to buy some equipment and products. I try to keep expenses down, and I don’t over extend myself financially. If I need something for the business, I wait until I have the money saved to pay for it.
KEY TO SUCCESS: Knowing what you do well and having your life’s work come from that.
CHALLENGES: Having a home office and keeping the two separate. Keeping to the allotted time for my sessions.
MISSTEP YOU LEARNED FROM: Advertising with an Internet Company called Groupon. Because of the “deal” being offered – my services at a lower-than-normal rate – I sold almost 300 sessions of massage and skin care. It was very difficult scheduling this amount of people in with my own clients. I learned that a “deal” isn’t going to bring you clients that truly want your service. I learned not to compromise myself and my skills. Another universal law.
WHAT OTHERS COULD LEARN FROM YOU: To be warm and welcoming. Don’t overbook or feel rushed on your services. Never skimp. And give with your heart and soul.
WHO HELPED MENTOR YOU PROFESSIONALLY: My teacher from the Chameleons Cosmetology and Esthetic School of Northampton, Pat Stander. Pat is a well of information and taught me so much about the science and physiology of the skin and how important the right ingredients are in treating skin types and their conditions. Val Nelson, my business coach, helped inspire my vision of a gratifying livelihood, attracting wonderful clients who value me and my innate talents.
TOP GOALS FOR 2012: Getting an office space with other like-minded professionals who share a common goal. Keep up with new and exciting studies of the skin and products. Go to the International Esthetics, Cosmetic and Spa Conference in New York City.
ADVICE FOR OTHERS SEEKING BUSINESS SUCCESS: Build from what you do well, and make your life’s work from that. Think success. You can make anything happen in your life if you really want it. Do the footwork, believe in yourself and the universe will supply.
