UMass-Lowell hockey routs Minutemen at Mullins Center
The University of Massachusetts men’s hockey team lost to UMass-Lowell 8-2 Sunday at the Mullins Center.
The Minutemen surrendered the game’s first six goals.
Michael Pereira and Rocco Carzo scored for UMass (3-5-1, 2-5-1 Hockey East).
Steve Mastalerz made 10 saves in relief of Jeff Teglia in net for the Minutemen.
Amherst 1, Hamilton 0 — Conor Brown’s first collegiate goal was enough for the Lord Jeffs (2-0) at home Saturday.
Nathan Corey made 22 saves in the shutout for Amherst.
Women’s hockey
Hamilton 4, Amherst 3 (OT) — Hayley Opperman (two goals) and Ashley Salerno scored for Amherst, but the Jeffs (1-1) lost on the road Saturday.
Men’s soccer
Williams 0, Amherst 0 (Williams wins on PKs 4-3); Amherst 2, Swarthmore 1 — With a chance to go to the Final Four of the Division 3 NCAA Tournament, Amherst lost its first game of the year to rival Williams Sunday in Amherst.
The Jeffs (17-1-3) had 23 shots to Williams’ seven, but couldn’t get one past Than Finan, who made four saves for the Ephs.
Thomas Bull made two saves for Amherst.
Spencer Noon had a goal and an assist Saturday’s sectional win over Swarthmore at home.
Men’s basketball
Amherst 117, Curry 96 — Willy Workman of Northampton had 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists in the finals of the Ken Wright Memorial Invitational Tournament at home for the Jeffs (2-0) Sunday.
Workman garnered MVP honors for the tournament, averaging 17 points while shooting 64 percent from the floor.
Westfield State 84, Rutgers-Camden 80 — Grant Cooper of Northampton scored 10 points in a road win Saturday.
Trinity 61, UMass-Dartmouth 59 — Jake Laga of Northampton scored seven points in a loss Saturday at home.
Women’s basketball
Amherst 88, William Paterson 61; Amherst 67, Brooklyn 42 — The Jeffs beat William Paterson Sunday to win the Amherst Tip-Off Tournament.
Megan Robertson (17 points, 15 boards) was the Tournament MVP, averaging 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Bridget Crowley had 22 points and 12 rebounds in the Jeffs’ season-opening win over Brooklyn Saturday at home.
Robertson finished with 17 points and nine rebounds.
Castleton State 52, Westfield 38 — Amherst native Alyssa Leonard had six points, four assists, and 11 rebounds in a win for Castleton on Saturday in Westfield.
The victory gave Castleton the win in Westfield’s inaugural Tip-Off Tournament. Leonard made the All-Tournament team.
Smith College 90, Roger Williams 62 — The Pioneers got 17 points from Paulina Solis in their season-opening road win on Saturday.
Saint Rose 57, Concordia 52 — Mariah Lesure of Amherst had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Knights (2-0) in Flushing, N.Y., Saturday.
Men’s swimming & diving
Amherst 173, Colby 103 — Amherst won 11 of 16 events Sunday at home.
Jeff Anderson won the 200-breaststroke (2:15.78). Nick Egan took first in the 200-free (1:46.14) for the Lord Jeffs (1-0).
Women’s swimming & diving
Amherst 157, Colby 109 — Co-Captain Katie Vincett paced the Jeffs with a win in the 100-free as well as a second place finish in the 100-breaststroke in the Lord Jeffs’ season opener at home Sunday.
Mount Holyoke 148, Western Connecticut 66 — Rachel Boynton of Northampton took first in the 1000-free (11:49.63) in the Lyons’ home win on Saturday.
Bentley 126, UMass-Dartmouth 92 — Morgan Cooper of Sunderland won the 200-breaststroke (2:43.05) in a loss for the Corsairs Saturday at home.
