The town will not require a special election to replace Select Board Vice Chairman Robert G. Judge now that he has started his new job as personnel director for the city of Holyoke.

Judge said Tuesday he will continue to serve on the South Hadley board until the annual town election in April, avoiding the necessity of holding a special town election to choose his replacement.

Judge, 60, of 180 North Main St., was elected to a three-year term in April 2011, expiring in 2014.

Judge starts his new job today. Workers on the municipal payroll in Holyoke must live in the city or relocate there within six months of taking a city job. Judge was offered the job in September, but had to wait until the Holyoke City Council voted to confirm his appointment. That vote came last week, Judge said.

He said he and his wife Brenda “have really been enjoying ourselves” shopping for a new home in Holyoke. Judge is a South Hadley native who has lived in town for the past 20 years.

Judge is the second South Hadley Select Board member this year to leave before the end of his term due to job considerations.

Former member Bruce S. MacCullagh stepped down in June, saying the demands of his position with a Boston software company left him with insufficient time to devote to town governance. Ira J. Brezinsky was elected to fill MacCullagh’s remaining seven-month term in a Sept. 6 special election.

Holyoke Mayor Alex B. Morse has said he expects Judge to sign a five-year contract to head the city’s personnel department. The job pays $61,270 per year.

The Holyoke mayor wants the city’s personnel director to consolidate personnel matters for the city, its school department and Holyoke Gas and Electric Department at City Hall. Holyoke has more than 2,000 workers, including more than 1,300 school department employees.
