Failed Easthampton override doesn’t mean support lacking

To the editor:

I would like to thank the residents of Easthampton who support our schools. Easthampton failed to pass a $1.4 million override. I supported the override, and volunteered with the Committee for Stronger Schools. While disappointed, I know that Easthampton values its schools.

I am hopeful for the future of our schools. As a mother of two children at Maple School and as a soccer coach for three years, I have met numerous families who care deeply about their children’s education; a school system backed by caring parents is strong and resilient. While canvassing for the Committee for Stronger Schools I spoke to senior citizens, teachers and people without children who supported the override because they realized its importance to the success of our children, our schools and our town.

Lastly, I witnessed the dedication of the leaders of the Committee for Stronger Schools. With these parents leading the charge, our schools will continue to improve.

I believe there is greater support for our schools than this vote may indicate. Let’s not forget that we recently voted to approve a debt-exclusion for our new high school. Many residents may have voted to support the high school, but did not have it in their budgets to support additional taxes at this time.

In the wake of the defeat of the override, let’s not forget the forward trajectory our schools are on, or lose sight of other ways we can help improve our schools.

We can volunteer our time and skills, we can organize to make a reality other improvements we wish to see in our schools and — dare I suggest — we can send in donations to the Easthampton schools.

Even though it will not be appearing on our tax bills this year, a donation to the schools is always welcome.
