50 Years Ago

Patrolman Richard Shea saved the taxpayers some money Wednesday. He found the change-making machine in the Armory Street parking lot open while making his rounds, and called the station and stood guard at the machine until Patrolman Stephen Czerapowicz arrived and locked up the machine.

Making up for last night when they were closed for the holiday, Northampton stores will remain open until 9 this evening. Also open in accordance with their usual Friday night schedule will be stores in Florence and some large chain supermarkets.

Former Northampton resident Michael Chinoy has opened Cable News Network’s 11th foreign bureau in Beijing, China. “His background made him a natural for the position,” said Bennett Owen of CNN’s public relations office.

For the 14th year in a row, the Northampton Honor Court will deliver Thanksgiving dinners to the area’s elderly and shut-ins. Members of the Honor Court have already begun preparing 75 large turkeys, many of them given by an anonymous donor.

Employees of Northampton Nursing Home ratified a new wage contract Thursday afternoon, despite opposition by some nursing assistants on the staff. Paul Lagreze, an occupational therapy assistant at the Bridge Road home who helped negotiate the pact with management, said he was “very happy” with the result.

Ten new cadets and a dog named Max will be added to the University of Massachusetts Police Department, two of several campus safety initiatives to be implemented next semester. The initiatives were recommended by students, parents, faculty and staff on the Chancellor’s Committee on Campus Safety.
