Elevator at 22-floor University of Massachusetts dorm needs repair; vandalism suspected
AMHERST — An elevator in one of the dormitories in the Southwest Residential Area at the University of Massachusetts was out of service Saturday night, probably due to vandalism, said UMass spokesman Daniel Fitzgibbons.
The elevator is in John Quincy Adams, a 22-floor dormitory, he said. UMass officials learned that it was broken late Saturday night, and a maintenance crew was brought in early Sunday, he said.
The crew was able to fix the elevator Sunday morning, Fitzgibbons said. No one was injured, but UMass will have to pay the cost of the repair, he said. As of Tuesday, it was not known what that bill will come to, he said.
The repair crew said that vandalism was the probable cause of the malfunction, he said.
There was minimal inconvenience to the residents of the dormitory because there is more than one elevator in the building, he said.
