Northampton High School PTO to screen documentary on public schools

For those interested in hot-button school reform issues such as standardized testing, the role of teachers unions and vouchers and charter schools — this screening’s for you.

The Northampton High School PTO is hosting a free showing of the new documentary “The Inconvenient Truth Behind Waiting for Superman” on Monday at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

The film, by the New York City-based Grassroots Education Movement, is an answer to the 2010 documentary hit “Waiting for Superman” by David Guggenheim, who also made “An Inconvenient Truth.” The new 68-minute movie challenges Guggenheim’s criticisms of public schools and teachers unions in interviews with New York City parents, teachers and students.

Ellen Hirschberg, NHS’s school nurse, attended a screening of the film earlier this year at the Media Education Foundation and was inspired to bring it to the high school.

“It’s one of those call-to-action movies,” she said. “A way for people to be involved in these issues.”

A panel discussion with local educators and experts will follow the film.
