FLORENCE — Robert P. Jekanowski, 73, of Florence, passed away Friday, Oct. 26, with his loving family by his side.
Born in Hadley, April 30, 1939, he was the son of the late Jacob and Mary (Gwosdik) Jekanowski.
Robert was a 1957 graduate of Northampton High School, and attended college on Cape Cod for culinary arts. He was the owner of the Broadview Bar and Restaurant in Holyoke in the 1970s. Robert had worked as a chef for many restaurants, including the Captain’s Table in Cape Cod, Whale Inn, Log Cabin, and for Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
Robert was a U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force National Guard veteran from 1957 through 1980. Bob was “Airman of the Year” in 1975 and in the Air National Guard for 12 years which he treasured. He was also a member of the Northampton American Legion Post 28, Northampton Revolver Club, and the National Rifle Association.
Robert and his wife, Mary, celebrated 44 years of marriage on his day of passing; they loved and adored one another, and were each other’s life. He was a caring and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He always took care of his family, and for that he will be greatly missed.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Mary (Armstrong) Jekanowski; his son, Robert Jr. and his wife, Christine, of Midlothian, Va.; his two daughters, Cheryl Major and Erica Jekanowski, both of Florence; his brother, Jacob and his wife, Jeanne Jekanowski, of Leominster; his grandchildren Harlan, Kimberly and Jessica Jekanowski of Virginia, and Ashley Major of Florence; a nephew, James Jekanowski of North Attleboro; and many dear cousins. He will be greatly missed by his faithful companion Cleopatra.
The funeral will be Thursday at 9 a.m. from the Drozdal Funeral Home in Northampton with a Requiem Mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Name of Jesus Church on Thayer Street in South Deerfield.
Burial with military honors will follow in Holy Name of Jesus Cemetery, South Deerfield.
