In a downtown full of rainwear and umbrellas earlier this week, the colors and stripes worn by Alice Hixon Kirk, a student at Smith College in Northampton, stood out.

HER STYLE: A lot of my clothes are left over from my grandfather’s closet or belonged to relatives who were rock ’n’ roll musicians. I wear some things that can’t be made anymore.

nnn

JACKET: I got this at Retro Genie and I think he said it was made in the 1940s. It reminded me of that Monty Python skit where they all go to the beach.

PANTS: Corduroy is one of my favorite materials because it’s thick and I like the tactile quality. These are from Urban Outfitters.

BOOTS: Doc Martens boots are always the way to go. They’re like slippers once you break them in.

GLOVES: These were made by a friend and they’re really simple and sweet.

SUNGLASSES: They’re $5 knockoffs and they’re scratched. I think they’re supposed to be Ray-Bans.

SCARF: It’s something of my mother’s. It’s plain and kudgey — a word I think I made up.

nnn

GETTING DRESSED: I have this weird system because right now all my clothes are in stacks on the floor because I’m moving.

nnn

FASHION PRIORITY: I try to dress for comfort.
