Thieves target Goshen selectman John Judd’s garage; tools, equipment stolen

— A garage owned by Selectman John Judd was the target of thieves who made off with a laundry list of electrical tools and mechanical equipment sometime last week.

Police Chief Jeffrey Hewes said the theft had gone undiscovered for a few days before it was reported.

“I just found out about it this morning,” Hewes said Monday morning.

Judd said that his son-in-law discovered the theft when he went into the garage in search of a lawn tool.

“He told my wife and daughter that there looked to be a lot of stuff that wasn’t there anymore,” Judd said.

According to Judd, a significant amount of power tools were stolen, as well as other items including lawn maintenance machinery, power saws and a hydraulic jack.

The garage had no windows and the door was locked, but Judd said that it looked as though the door had been forcibly pried open.

With the size and amount of items that were taken, the thief or thieves would have needed a good-sized vehicle to haul out the stolen items, said Judd.

Judd said he is compiling a list for the insurance company of items that were stolen, but could not estimate the value of what was lost.

He said that he is used to cars frequently turning around in his driveway or in the driveway of the Town Hall, which is right next door.

“Being out here, it is actually amazing the number of cars that do come into the Town Hall driveway to turn around at night,” he said. He described the robbery as “unnerving.”

Hewes said that the theft is currently under investigation and is hoping that it is not the beginning of a rash of thefts.

“I have talked with other departments in the area and they haven’t seen this occurring in their towns, so hopefully it is just this single incident,” Hewes said.
