Weekend Planner: Books

If you’re a poetry lover with an extra $3,500 lying around you might want to pick up a copy — one of only 60 available — of “The Gorgeous Nothings: Emily Dickinson’s Envelope-Poems” by artist Jen Bervin and Dickinson scholar Marta Werner. The limited edition artist book includes a portfolio of 48 unbound double-sided color facsimiles showing the front and back of poems written by Dickinson on envelopes she happened to find handy. It includes a 32-page guide with visual indexes and a 52-page essay by Werner (“Itineraries of Escape: Emily Dickinson’s Envelope-Poems”) and comes “housed in a lignin-free archival box with an original line drawing in blue pencil and a hand-painted seal of gum arabic and gouache.”

On Friday Bervin and Werner will be at Amherst College’s Frost Library (first floor) for a book presentation, 2-3:30 p.m. On Saturday they’ll be at the Amherst Woman’s Club at 35 Triangle St. in Amherst, 10 a.m.-noon, to conduct a workshop exploring how Dickinson used the envelope as a formal space for poetic composition and inviting participants to conduct their own experiments with envelope forms. The presentation is free. There is a $20 charge for the workshop and preregistration is required. Contact Valerie Gramling, 542-2034 or vgramling@emilydickinsonmuseum.org.
