Walter Beckwith Jr.

He was born in Mapleton, Maine, Oct. 31, 1924, the son of Walter W. Sr. and Alta Maybelle (Smith) Beckwith.

Walter worked at the docks in Maine until he was 17 years old when he moved to East Hawley to live with his sister Ruth and worked for her husband Ernest Donovan.

He married the former Albertine Bernier on Oct. 16, 1949.

They lived in Chesterfield before moving to their home on North Street in Plainfield in 1962 where he remained until his death.

He worked for Donovan Brothers Inc. of Huntington from 1951 until his retirement in 1995.

His wife predeceased him in 2002.

Survivors include his five sons, Lionel of Plainfield, Norman (Patricia Wilcox) of Plainfield, Ernest (Ruth Chadwick) of Buckland, Ronald of Plainfield, Christopher (Amy Seymore) of Florence; one sister, Blanche Beckwith of Presque Isle, Maine; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. His granddaughter, Amanda Beckwith, was his loving caregiver.

He was predeceased by his son Peter in 2011 and his grandson James in 2009.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate his life will be held Sunday, Oct. 21, from 2 to 4 at Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home in Shelburne Falls.

In lieu of flowers it is suggested donations be made to either Highland Ambulance EMS Inc., 56 Main St., Goshen, 01032 or to VNA & Hospice of Cooley Dickinson, 168 Industrial Drive, Northampton, 01060.
