Accident closes Amherst street; motorist arrested for drunken driving
AMHERST — A South Amherst road was closed to traffic for more than two hours Monday night after a vehicle struck a fire hydrant and knocked over a utility pole.
Police Detective David Foster said the 2005 Volvo XC90 driven by Ryan Hunter Footit, 22, of 66 Edelcy Drive, Belchertown, was traveling in the area of 904 Bay Road at 7:05 p.m. when it went out of control.
Footit was arrested on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and failure to stay within marked lanes, Foster said.
The road was immediately blocked to traffic between South East Street and Elf Hill Road. Belchertown police assisted Amherst police in closing its end of Bay Road.
The Department of Public Works got to the scene to fix the hydrant and Western Massachusetts Electric Co. responded to repair the pole, which had snapped at its base and was hanging by the electrical and telephone wires, Foster said.
