Northampton Police Department promotes two, hires four

John D. Cartledge, a Northampton native and 17-year veteran will be the shift commander for the overnight shift as the department’s newest lieutenant. He replaces the retired Michael R. Patenaude.

Cartledge, 41, began with the department in 1995 as an officer and has held the rank of sergeant for the last five years. He is also the supervisor of the departments field training and evaluation program and its accreditation manager.

Cartledge was also honored Thursday with a mayoral certificate of excellence for leading the department’s reaccreditation process.

Replacing Cartledge as sergeant Josef Barszcz, 31, a seven-year veteran who is a traffic accident reconstructionist and field training officer for the department. He will work the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift.

The department’s new officers are:

∎ Christopher Dumas, 26, of Grafton. A graduate of the Boylston Police Academy, Dumas is a veteran of the U.S. Army and active reservist. He is a graduate of Quinsigamond Community College.

∎ Brendan McKinney, 27, of Easthampton. He graduated from the Western Massachusetts Regional Police Academy in Springfield, where he earned the highest academic average, he is a part-time officer for the Southampton Police Department. He holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. ∎ Andrew McGrath, 27, of Melrose. He graduated from the Western Massachusetts Regional Police Academy in Springfield, previously working as a victim and witness advocate for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. He holds a bachelor’s degree in legal studies from UMass.

∎ Jeffrey Staples, 28, of Belchertown. He too graduated from the Western Massachusetts Regional Police Academy in Springfield. He previously worked as a manger for Spoke Enterprises in Amherst and holds a bachelor’s degree in animal science from UMass.
