Pelican Plastics in Deerfield lays off 12
DEERFIELD — The Pelican Products plastics manufacturer laid off 12 employees this week.
This is a small reduction for the manufacturer, formerly Hardigg Industries. The total work force at the North Main Street location is 450 employees.
“We’re experiencing a softness in the economy and a decline in military spending,” said Sharon Ward, a spokesperson at Pelican’s headquarters in Torrance, Calif. Going forward, the company plans to consolidate positions and look at new consumer markets to increase business. The Deerfield facility will focus on new products for Pelican’s BioPharma Division and ProGear line, which will include coolers for camping.
A total of 45 employees were let go in the entire company, which has six manufacturing locations in North America and Europe.
In 2009, the company reduced its Deerfield work force due to an economic downturn and its consolidation with the former Hardigg Industrial Inc, which it acquired at the time.
