Deerfield Police said that Officer Chad Wrisley responded to reports of a burning car on Lee Road at 1:22 a.m. When he arrived, he found that the car had hit another vehicle parked on the side of the road, smashed into a mailbox and fence, and was on fire in the middle of the road.

The driver, Alan R. Wicklund, 22, of 17 Thayer St., South Deerfield, who called police from a nearby house, told officers he had been drinking in a bar before he drove and did not know how he had lost control or hit the parked car.

In his report, Wrisley wrote that Wicklund had an “overwhelming” odor of alcohol on his breath, was swaying and had glassy, bloodshot eyes. He failed three field sobriety tests and took a breath test with a result of 0.19 percent — more than twice the legal limit. Wicklund was subsequently arrested.

Police allege that he had been driving while under the influence of alcohol and speeding westbound from Stillwater Road onto Lee Road when the accident occurred.

According to the police report, Wicklund suffered only a bloody nose and refused an ambulance ride to the hospital. The fire was extinguished at 1:38 a.m. by the South Deerfield Fire Department.

Wicklund pleaded innocent in Greenfield District Court on Friday to charges of operating while under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, failure to drive in the proper lane, driving with a suspended license and not having a license in his possession.
