Big Y and Stop & Shop issue recall of organic fruits
The two biggest supermarket chains in western Massachusetts have announced a recall of some varieties of organic fruits because of a risk of listeria contamination.
This comes after the supplier of the fruits, Wawona Packing company based in Cutler, California, notified the chains of a voluntarily recall for certain batches of peaches, nectarines, plums and pluots packed between June 1 and July 12. No illnesses have been traced back to these fruits.
Listeriosis, the infection caused by listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria potentially present in the fruits, can cause serious and even fatal illness in children, the elderly, or those with weakened immune systems. Even in healthy people, infection may cause high fever, severe headache, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Listeria can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
The recall comes after Wawona tested the product line themselves. The company shut down the lines involved in the recall and sanitized the area. Daily tests since the recall have turned up negative.
