Jesse Crepeau of Belchertown pleads guilty to raping 12-year-old girl; sentenced to 7 to 9 years in state prison

Tuesday afternoon, Jesse Crepeau, 38, of 121 North Main St., pleaded guilty to two counts of rape and abuse of a child and one count of assault and battery before Hampshire Superior Court Judge Richard Carey.

He was sentenced to 7 to 9 years followed by 10 years of probation. The plea was the result of an agreed-upon deal between the parties.

As a matter of policy, the Gazette does not identify victims of sexual assaults.

The assaults took place from June of 2008 to August, 2013, according to court records.

Crepeau incurred the assault and battery charge for putting his hands around the girl’s throat and pinning her up against a door.

In court, Assistant Northwestern District Attorney Caleb Weiner called it a “horrific pattern of abuse,” and said the abuses happened “too many times” for the victim to count.

“She characterized the entire period during which this would take place as, in a word, hell,” Weiner said.

Weiner said Crepeau would often use a code phrase when he wanted sex from the girl and would ask her if she would, “be nice,” Weiner said.

In pleading guilty, Crepeau admitted he would try to entice the girl by giving her candy after the assaults.

The girl reported the assaults to Belchertown Police in August 2013. She did not appear in court Tuesday.

Crepeau made no statement in court apart from answering Carey’s questions with a quiet, “Yes, sir.”

Crepeau’s attorney, Marissa Elkins, of Northampton said Crepeau is hoping to get counseling and treatment once he begins his sentence at the maximum security Cedar Junction Correctional Institution in Walpole.

He was given credit for 139 days of time already served in custody.

7 years for raping a 12 year old girl? Good they got a conviction but at least a decade behind bars would have been my hope. Obviously they spared her from having to testify, but this guy got off easy.

It's pretty shocking, isn't it? 7 years for raping a girl over a period of 5 years.
