UMass hospitality industry career day to feature over 60 companies, including Mohegan Sun and MGM Grand

Mohegan Sun and MGM Grand will join 10 other first-time companies registered for the event to be held on March 5. Over 60 companies have signed on so far for what marketing chair Alissa Mendelsohn said is the largest student-run hospitality career day in New England.

“This is a big deal for us because it’s the 40th consecutive year the department has held career day,” she said.

The event is open only to UMass students in hospitality and tourism management and companies who register, she said.

So far the event has drawn more companies than it had in the past five years, she said. Organizers are particularly happy that casino representatives will be present.

“Students and professionals are hoping that the addition of these two casinos in the area will help the economy in western Massachusetts,” she said.

Others employers expected to participate are globally renowned companies, such as Marriott, Hyatt, and Starwood hotels.

“Recruiters are seeking hospitality students of all levels of experience, and are offering positions such as summer internships, and full-time management-in-training programs,” Mendelsohn said.

According to the U.S .Department of Labor, the hospitality industry was projected to add 17 percent in wage and salary employment between 2004 and 2014, Mendelsohn said in a statement. Within the industry, wage and salary jobs in food services and drinking establishments were expected to increase by 16 percent between 2004 and 2014, compared to 14 percent growth projected for wage and salary employment in all industries combined, the statement says.
