Whately teen earns top honors at World Dairy exposition

WHATELY - On Oct. 1, while most of her peers were sitting in class back at home, 16-year-old Sarah Belder of Whately was making the rounds in the colossal show ring at the World Dairy Exposition in Madison, Wis. After traveling halfway across the country and competing in three grueling rounds in the Youth Showmanship category, Belder was named the 10th best youth dairy showman in the world.

Case ends Frontier volleyball season

ASHLAND - Another state semifinal appearance, another frustrating loss for the Frontier regional girls volleyball team.

The Red Hawks struggled with unforced errors and missed services, and Joseph Case High School took advantage in a 23-25, 25-19, 25-19, 26-24 victory in the State Division 3 Tournament on Wednesday night at Ashland High School.

Running on empty: After six decades on road, bookmobile for western Massachusetts is halted by budget cuts

Over the years, the small community library in Whately has been able to refresh its collection without spending any money because of the regional library system's bookmobile service. For about six decades, bookmobile trucks have transported books and other items to libraries all over western Massachusetts. The libraries could keep the rotating collections for about 11 weeks. But, the small library will have to go without this service at the beginning of next year as the Western Massachusetts Regional Library System has decided to stop the bookmobile service. The last day will be Dec. 31.

Frontier Regional girls volleyball team seized control of the Western Massachusetts Division 3 Tournament quarterfinal match early and used 27 aces to roll to a 25-16, 25-15, 25-14 victory over Monument Mountain Thursday night at Goodnow Gymnasium.
