Four Sundays in February turns back musical clock with ‘Rusty Nail Revisited’

Before Pearl Street Nightclub and the Calvin Theatre, the Iron Horse Music Hall or other Valley clubs that have since come and gone, there was the Rusty Nail, perched on the edge of corn and tobacco fields on Route 47 in Sunderland, just over the Hadley town line. In the 1970s and early '80s - before the club burned to the ground in 1985 - the Nail boasted one of the busiest music scenes in the area, hosting not just popular local bands like Fat and Clean Living but rising regional acts such as NRBQ and fabled bluesmen John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy and Muddy Waters.

Monday's high school hockey: Turners Falls defeats Greenfield

The Turners Falls hockey team scored a big victory Monday, beating Greenfield 3-1 at Collins-Moylan Rink in Greenfield.

The Indians (7-9) needed the win to keep their hopes of a postseason berth alive.

Keegan Downey (assist) scored twice, while Trevor Peduzzi had one goal.

Dubbed 'irreplaceable,' planner Stuart Beckley says goodbye to Easthampton

EASTHAMPTON - Stuart Beckley spent his last day as city planner much as he did many others in his 22 years on the job: attending meetings, coordinating details with other city officials and meeting with potential bidders for an affordable housing project on Everett Street.

Beckley, 50, of Sunderland, starts a new job as Ware's town manager Monday.

Sunderland puts out call for used DVDs to stock library

SUNDERLAND - The Sunderland Public Library wants to boost its DVD selection and is putting out the call for donations. Adam Novitt, the library's new director, said that while the library has about 1,200 videos in its collection, only about 100 of those get checked out with any regularity.

After some recent struggles on that end of the court, however, the Red Hawks know they need to get back to that old mind-set to avoid more losses like the one they had at home Wednesday.

Sunderland man cleared for trial in 20-year-old case

NORTHAMPTON - A Sunderland man charged with sexually assaulting a girl more than 20 years ago has been declared competent to stand trial.

Jose L. Calderon, 48, of 248 Amherst Road, has been held at the Hampshire County House of Correction in lieu of $2,500 cash bail or $25,000 surety since his arrest in October.

Stella Cybulski, mother, grandmother

SUNDERLAND - Stella (Dudkiewicz) Cybulski, 97, of 200 North Main St., Sunderland, died Friday morning, Jan. 20, 2012, at the Cozy Corner Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sunderland.

She was born June 9, 1914, in North Hatfield, the daughter of Daniel and Mary (Oshepa) Dudkiewicz.

She was educated in Hadley schools, and in her early years she worked at the family farm.
