To the newly re-elected mayor and City Council members, congrats. I live in Ward 6 and I am in favor of the expansion of the landfill.

Legislative, political process best way to decide landfill's fate

Referenda are often wasteful distractions from intelligent political decision-making. For example, critical issues such as whether Northampton should expand its landfill should be decided through the legislative process on the basis of objective environmental, economic and scientific data - and not on the basis of the results of misleading referenda, which frequently generate false impressions regarding public sentiment.

I was dismayed to read the Nov. 12 headline on the House's health care vote, "Bishops shaping health ¿reform.'" According to Catholics for Choice, the Stupak-Pitts amendment "goes far beyond the status quo on abortion restrictions and would make it nearly impossible for insurance plans in the new system to offer abortion coverage."

Creating a University of Massachusetts law school is again on the table, after trustees of the Southern New England School of Law voted to donate their campus and program - yes, at no cost - to neighboring UMass-Dartmouth. On Wednesday, a committee of the UMass Board of Trustees voted 11-5 to back the proposal.
