Northampton needs to buy the Bean Farm, and it needs to remain a farm. Digging, weeding and harvesting alongside your neighbor builds community and sustains the local economy. Local food is an economic force worthy of our attention.

I enjoyed your article on bike shop owner Jason Graves in Hampshire Life ("Jason Graves and his band of BMXers," Nov. 6). Jason does a great job with BMX bikes and even a better job caring about the kids who ride them. His shop often feels like a teen center. As a teacher I have been impressed with how he reaches out to kids and makes them feel welcome.

On Nov. 11, a day put aside to honor the sacrifices of our veterans, it has become apparent that this is not a day to honor all veterans - at least by the actions of our son's own town government and the veterans organizations of the town in which he lived and died.

The Lord Jeffery Inn's lost year - and then some - is coming at last to an end. Amherst College this week announced it will move ahead with a $14 million renovation project that will enable the inn to reopen roughly 50 rooms, expand its restaurant and introduce a ballroom by the spring of 2011.

NORTHAMPTON - Today is the 10th anniversary of National Adoption Day, an effort to celebrate the creation of families through public adoption of children from foster care. This morning, we join 200 families from across the Commonwealth as we adopt our son.
