WHATELY - On Oct. 1, while most of her peers were sitting in class back at home, 16-year-old Sarah Belder of Whately was making the rounds in the colossal show ring at the World Dairy Exposition in Madison, Wis. After traveling halfway across the country and competing in three grueling rounds in the Youth Showmanship category, Belder was named the 10th best youth dairy showman in the world.

Over the years, the small community library in Whately has been able to refresh its collection without spending any money because of the regional library system's bookmobile service. For about six decades, bookmobile trucks have transported books and other items to libraries all over western Massachusetts. The libraries could keep the rotating collections for about 11 weeks. But, the small library will have to go without this service at the beginning of next year as the Western Massachusetts Regional Library System has decided to stop the bookmobile service. The last day will be Dec. 31.

The Whately Historical Society received an unexpected gift last month: the building that houses the town's post office. The society was willed the building on Chestnut Plain Road by Gertrude C. Bardwell, a longtime Whately resident who died on Oct. 5.

SOUTH DEERFIELD - Free seasonal flu vaccines will be available for adult (19 years and older) residents of Conway, Deerfield, Sunderland and Whately.
The vaccines will be available on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Deerfield Municipal Offices, 8 Conway St. Participants are asked to be prepared to roll up their sleeves and to stay for 20 minutes after receiving the shot.

WHATELY - The recession may still be gripping the wallets of Wall Street, but in the fields surrounding Timothy Nourse's farm on River Road, there is no sign of it.
As the growing season comes to a close in the Pioneer Valley, Nourse Farm continues to grow, as it expands its berry operation to keep up with its flourishing business.

WHATELY - A small group of residents voted to reject the local meals and rooms tax options at a special Town Meeting Monday at the elementary school.
The tax option, recommended by the Board of Selectmen, was defeated in a 10-5 vote after 25 minutes of discussion.
