Berkshire Trail loses heat briefly

CUMMINGTON - There was no heat for part of the day Wednesday at Berkshire Trail Elementary School because of a problem with the fuel tank, according to the school principal.

Southampton residents get good budget news

SOUTHAMPTON - Town residents will take up a fiscal 2010 budget that is nearly $50,000 less than the one they approved this spring at 7 tonight at special Town Meeting in the William E. Norris Elementary School on Pomeroy Meadow Road.

The $13.01 million budget voters approved in June has dropped to $12.96 million due to reductions in regional school and health insurance costs.

PILOT cuts may hurt area towns

BOSTON - In announcing painful budget cuts last month, Gov. Deval Patrick highlighted the fact local aid - the money cities and towns use to fund schools and emergency services - would not be touched.

Man admits 2004 sexual assault

NORTHAMPTON - Freed from prison after appealing a rape conviction, an area man now has taken responsibility for the 2004 sexual assault, which took place in the Meadows section of the city.

Before his release, Francis H. Desmarais, 58, had served nearly two years' worth of a four- to six-year sentence. Thanks to a plea agreement reached Thursday, he won't do any more time.

 · Police took a report Tuesday at 11 p.m. that a man got inside the high school and attempted to steal recyclable cans. A custodian followed the suspect from the high school to downtown Amherst, where police determined the man has mental-health issues and brought him back to his caretaker.
