AMHERST - Modern technology that included the use of surveillance cameras and an anti-theft device for a computer assisted University of Massachusetts police locate a man who stole a laptop and an iPod from a dorm room earlier this month.

NORTHAMPTON - Police Wednesday arrested a Florence man who allegedly disciplined his 10-year-old son by making him hold a jug full of water over his head for 30 minutes.

· Latoya Diana Smith, 24, of 114 N. Whitney St., was arrested Thursday at 2:47 a.m. at the intersection of North Whitney and Main streets on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and failure to stay within marked lanes, police said.

Police alert residents to string of break-ins
AMHERST - Police are asking residents of North Amherst apartment complexes to be aware of suspicious people and to keep their doors and windows locked following a string of recent break-ins, including one Monday night in which burglars were still inside when the resident returned home.

EASTHAMPTON - Two Northampton teens were ordered held without bail Tuesday and two others remain at large for their alleged involvement in an armed robbery at a Pleasant Street rooming house Monday evening.

SUNDERLAND - A Hadley Road man was arrested Monday night on charges of vandalism and trying to break into a home.
Adam Cicia, 28, of 35 Hadley Road, apartment 219, has been charged with malicious or wanton destruction of property, attempt to commit a crime (breaking and entering) and assault and battery on a police officer. He pleaded innocent to the charges.

Police: Men brawl inside minivan
NORTHAMPTON - Two men were arrested after an alleged brawl inside a minivan parked on Old South Street Monday afternoon.
Wayne H. Ascioti, 48, of 472 North King St., and Joseph Stanley Borowski, 42, of 5 Linden St., were arrested about 3:40 p.m. on charges of disorderly conduct and assault and battery.
