Hopkins Academy girls basketball falls short against undefeated Mahar

HADLEY - Olivia Mathieu did everything she could to try to will the Hopkins Academy girls basketball team to a victory over unbeaten Mahar Regional.

The junior guard created turnovers, fought hard on the glass and took over when needed offensively, but it wasn't enough in a 72-63 loss to the Senators at home Friday night.

Smith Academy boys basketball defeats Hopkins to qualify for tourney

HATFIELD - The Smith Academy boys basketball clinched a berth in the postseason Monday night with a 70-34 victory against rival Hopkins Academy. The Falcons (10-3, 9-2 Hampshire West) continued to grow as a team, as two years ago it took them until the last game of the season to clinch a western Massachusetts tournament berth. It also took just a bit longer last season in which they needed 15 games to clinch. "These guys have improved a lot, and they are willing to learn," Smith Academy coach Matt Zerneri said.

Her Hopkins Academy girls basketball team was one of the final squads to play their first game. That made it even harder when the junior guard was forced to the bench for much of the contest due to foul trouble. Mathieu made up for lost time in the fourth quarter, knocking down a pair of jumpers in the final two minutes as the Golden Hawks held off rival Smith Academy 46-37.
