Photo: Fatal Distraction

Fatal distraction: The road to banning cell phone use among drivers is long and winding...and quite possibly endless.

I've traveled the stretch of Interstate 91 between Springfield and Hartford for more than 30 years now, and I know it well. But even though the roadway is the same, something's changed. It's turned scary.

User Friendly: Beyond the best of the worst

In August, The New York Times ran an article detailing how the Conficker virus is a threat to Windows systems. The next day, Wired picked up the story and ran it again. I got a frenzy of calls, and even people here at work asked me if I'd seen the stories. One of my friends at work, Dan DeNicola, requested a column on the subject. OK, Dan. But this might not be what you expected.

First Person: Moby sick

Call me Ishmael. Call me captain. But don't call me seasick.

It's fair to say that dentistry runs in E.J. Welch's family. The Northampton dentist has followed in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather, and he says that over the years there have been eight Welch dentists in the region when you factor in his extended family.

Vintages: C'est Bon!

Americans are always looking for something new, the next big thing, the undiscovered star, designer, iPhone app or whatever. So it might seem strange to look to France - the stodgy, hidebound homeland of fine wine, with its rigid classifications and appellation laws - as a source of innovation in wine.
