The Turners Falls hockey team scored a big victory Monday, beating Greenfield 3-1 at Collins-Moylan Rink in Greenfield.
The Indians (7-9) needed the win to keep their hopes of a postseason berth alive.
Keegan Downey (assist) scored twice, while Trevor Peduzzi had one goal.

SOUTH DEERFIELD - Defense has been the foundation of the Frontier Regional girls basketball team's latest run of success.
After some recent struggles on that end of the court, however, the Red Hawks know they need to get back to that old mind-set to avoid more losses like the one they had at home Wednesday.

HATFIELD - With first place in the Hampshire West standings on the line Monday at Webb Gymnasium, Frontier Regional's Paul Decker led all scorers with 13 points as the Red Hawks defeated Smith Academy 56-49. Up one at halftime, 22-21, the Red Hawks (9-1, 8-1) came out flying in the second half to break the game open. At one point, they went on an 11-3 run in the third quarter to make it 35-24. Mat Sulda answered for the Falcons, knocking down two quick 3-pointers to cut the Frontier lead to 35-30. But the Red Hawks scored four of the next five points to lead 39-31 heading into the fourth, and never let Smith get within one possession.

HADLEY - Elizabeth Whitney showed off an impressive short-term memory Monday night. The Easthampton girls basketball standout junior overcame a shaky start at the foul line to take over down the stretch as the Eagles defeated Hopkins Academy in a thrilling 44-41 overtime contest for first place in the Franklin South.Whitney started the game 5-for-13 from the charity stripe, but made 3 of 4 in the final 1 minute, 1 second of regulation and went 6-for-6 in overtime as the Eagles (9-1, Franklin South) extended their winning streak to six straight.

Travis Holloway scored on an assist from Brandon Lenois in the third period as the Turners Falls hockey team avoided the shutout in an 8-1 loss to Agawam Friday evening at the Olympia.
Will Miller (25 saves) and Jack Powers (nine) split time in goal for the Indians (1-7).

The Frontier Regional wrestling team earned another victory Wednesday with a 47-24 win over Gateway Regional in South Deerfield.
Ben McGranaghan pinned Mike Scuderi at 106 pounds, Kirby Compton-Burch pinned Brandon Noe at 138 and Marc Saulnier pinned Andrew Goskeiwicz at 145 for the Red Hawks.

Cassidy Stankowski's high school career places her among the most successful, most dominating athletes in Western Massachusetts sports history. And she's only just finished her junior year. The Frontier Regional superstar has accomplished so much and reached such a level of excellence that the adjectives commonly used to explain local standouts simply don't do her justice. She was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Massachusetts, the Daily Hampshire Gazette's Player of the Year and verbally committed to play on scholarship at Division I Central Connecticut State in the fall of 2012.
