Trims to art, music eyed for Deerfield Elementary

DEERFIELD - The Deerfield Elementary School budget proposed for next year shows a 2.5 percent increase overall, but trims art and music spending slightly.

The Deerfield School Committee this week voted to reduce a music teaching position and an art teaching job from four days a week to 3½ days each.

Monday's high school hockey: Turners Falls defeats Greenfield

The Turners Falls hockey team scored a big victory Monday, beating Greenfield 3-1 at Collins-Moylan Rink in Greenfield.

The Indians (7-9) needed the win to keep their hopes of a postseason berth alive.

Keegan Downey (assist) scored twice, while Trevor Peduzzi had one goal.

New England Patriots fans line up their charms before Sunday's Super Bowl

Unless you can swing a trip to Indianapolis, the big question for Super Bowl fans: Where to watch? Sports bar? Big rowdy group or intimate rec room? Your lucky couch? The Marrapese family will be rooting Sunday for the Patriots against the Giants, but not from New England this year. In fact, the Deerfield family will be watching from a different country altogether - when they travel to Cancun, Mexico. Other fans plan on watching the big game in new locations or old ones.

Rose E. Lankowski, worked at UMass

SOUTH DEERFIELD - Rose E. (Tudryn) Lankowski, 81, of South Deerfield, died Jan. 27, 2012, at the Center for Extended Care in Amherst.

Born April 3, 1930, in North Hadley, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Tekla (Wilkzynski) Tudryn. She grew up in North Hadley and attended Hopkins Academy.

CISA nets $75,000 to encourage buy local efforts

DEERFIELD - The Deerfield-based Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture has been awarded $75,000 from the state as part of $200,000 worth of grants statewide to promote regional "buy local efforts."

SOUTH DEERFIELD - Rose (Tudryn) Lankowski, 81, formerly of 20 King Phillip Ave., died Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, in the Center for Extended Care in Amherst.

Arrangements under the direction of the Wrisley Funeral Home were incomplete.

After some recent struggles on that end of the court, however, the Red Hawks know they need to get back to that old mind-set to avoid more losses like the one they had at home Wednesday.
