After a year of decline, area college and university endowments are finally seeing some improvement.
Following last August's Wall Street meltdown, colleges nationwide were concerned endowments could lose as much as 30 percent of their value by the end of the fiscal year, forcing institutions to slash operating budgets.

AMHERST - Suicide is the third leading cause of death among college students, according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
And the students Harry S. Rockland-Miller, director of the University of Massachusetts Mental Health Services, is most concerned about are the ones who don't come in to see him.

Crime rates remained relatively stable on the Five College campuses from 2007 to 2008, according to the latest college crime reports.
The 2009 Clery Report, a compilation of campus crime statistics mandated by the federal government, was made available to the public this month. Individual campus reports provide information for 2008.

BOSTON (AP) - Southern New England School of Law is renewing efforts to create a University of Massachusetts law school.
The private law school in Dartmouth has offered to donate its campus to create the state's first public law school.

SEATTLE (AP) - It's an experiment that has made back-to-school a little easier on the back: Amazon.com gave more than 200 college students its Kindle e-reading device this fall, loaded with digital versions of their textbooks.
