THE ISSUE: The University of Massachusetts at Amherst is a 146-year-old campus whose large-scale capital rejuvenation project has run head-first into the recession. Almost 70 percent of the campus was constructed before the 1970s. According to university officials about $1.8 billion is needed to address all of the Amherst campus building needs. HOLYOKE - Enrollment at Holyoke Community College shot up 13 percent this fall, prompting the college to hire more faculty and offer more courses.
The dramatic increase is part of a national trend on community college campuses. In the midst of a recession, students are looking to save money on education by attending typically less expensive public schools.

NORTHAMPTON - There was no reason to shoot this messenger. Gov. Deval L. Patrick was in western Massachusetts Wednesday spreading good news in the cities of Amherst, Northampton and Holyoke: Yes, a high-performance computing center will be constructed in downtown Holyoke. Yes, Patrick will support a new multi-cultural learning initiative at the University of Massachusetts. And yes, once tax revenues pick up for the state, higher education funding will be restored.

SOUTH HADLEY - Asma Jahangir is treating her week as a scholar-in-residence at Mount Holyoke College as a chance to stop running, if only for a little while, and reflect. Jahangir, a prominent and controversial Pakistani lawyer, human rights activist and founding member and chairwoman of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, has spent the last 30 years fighting for the rights of Pakistani women, children and religious minorities -- and dodging attempts on her own safety.
