Wednesday's hockey games: Belchertown earns key win

Sean Kennedy's natural hat trick in the first period propelled the Belchertown hockey team to an important 5-1 victory over St. Joseph at the Pittsfield Boys & Girls Club on Wednesday. Joey Gallo and Alex Bachand added a goal apiece for the Orioles (8-6), who need four points in their last six games to qualify for the postseason.

Tyler Verville leads Belchertown boys basketball over Granby

GRANBY - Behind Tyler Verville's fast start the Belchertown boys basketball team raced out of the gate and never relinquished the lead, defeating Granby 68-59 Monday.

Verville finished with a career-high 19 points, all in the first half. Belchertown scored 28 to take a seven-point first-quarter lead.

Marilyn Higgins remembered in Belchertown as coach, teacher

Marilyn Higgins was a teacher in every sense of the word.

Higgins taught in the Belchertown school system for over 25 years, and coached at the high school for over 40 seasons and she impacted the lives around her daily.

Belchertown hockey defeats Central

Sean Kennedy scored twice to lead the Belchertown hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Central Thursday at Smead Arena in Springfield.

Brian Desrochers (two assists) and Wyatt Rousseau each had one goal for the Orioles (7-6), who moved above the .500 mark for the first time since starting the season 1-0.

Individual wrestling tournaments begin high school postseason this weekend

The first postseason event of the winter season kicks off Friday when the Western Massachusetts Division 3 individual wrestling tournament begins at Pioneer Regional in Northfield. The two-day event begins with the first two rounds and continues Saturday. The championship round is expected to start around 6 p.m. Saturday. The Division 1 tournament, meanwhile, takes place all day Saturday with title bouts expected to start around 6:30 p.m. In the Division 3 field, Granby junior James Cupak is fresh off a first-place finish at the Mountie Invitational in Williamstown and will be one of the top seeds at 182 pounds.

Wednesday's wrestling results: Frontier Regional has winning regular season

In a year the Frontier Regional wrestling team earned coach Don Gordon his 300th career victory, the Red Hawks had another reason to celebrate after their 48-24 victory over Athol at home Wednesday.

With the win, Frontier finished the regular season 10-9 overall (3-3 Tri-County) to earn its first winning season since the 2001-02 season.

Tuesday's swimming results: Belchertown girls finish perfect regular season

The Belchertown girls swimming team completed a perfect regular season Tuesday afternoon with an dominant 122-45 victory over West Springfield at Chestnut Hill Middle School.

The Orioles (12-0, 7-0 Patriot) finished first in every event but one, and had 13 different swimmers contribute to the victory.
