SOUTH HADLEY - Two and a half months after the freak Halloween snowstorm, grounds crews at the region's colleges continue to address the damage to their tree canopies. Paul Breen of Mount Holyoke College says 90 percent of the 1,100 trees on the core campus in South Hadley sustained some damage, and just over 50 will have to be removed. Campuses around the Pioneer Valley are in various stages of recovery.

AMHERST - A group organized to keep a 75-year-old Amherst College-based preschool in business is seeking town money to move the building off campus. Even though members of the Little Red Schoolhouse Preservation Committee don't know yet what Amherst College, which owns the building, plans to do with it, they are requesting $130,000 from the town's Community Preservation Act account to move it. More than a year ago, the college informed the Amherst Day School program, which runs the school, that it would have to leave the building as of June because a new science building will be under construction nearby over the next few years.
