Christine Flynn, Fitness Works
Job title: Owner and group fitness instructor of Fitness Works, Haydenville.
When business opened: Sept. 4, 2013
Your duties: I am in charge of creating and updating a class schedule, hiring instructors, teaching classes, marketing, cleaning the equipment and the studio, creating a monthly e-newsletter and communicating with clients and staff.
How did you start your business? Before opening Fitness Works I was teaching a wide range of group fitness classes at many locations in the Hilltowns and the Pioneer Valley. My goal was to bring together some of the area’s best instructors to one location. The Brass Works building seemed to be the perfect spot. Fitness Works employs five fitness instructors besides me.
What’s most challenging about your work? Getting the word out that we are open.
What do you like about it? I really enjoy that I am able to teach several types of classes a week and help inspire people to improve their health and fitness. I have met so many amazing people over my years of teaching fitness classes.
What is your key to success? Building our client base.
What role does technology play in your business? Technology is very important to our business. We have a really great website designed by a local designer and we use Mind Body software, which is specific to fitness businesses. Our clients are able to sign up for classes and pay online. We use Facebook quite a bit to communicate with our clients as well as to spread the word about our location.
Name goals for the coming year: Some of my goals for the upcoming year are to increase our membership and to begin offering workshops.
What is your advice for others seeking business success? Surround yourself with the best people that you can. The instructors that I work with are tremendous. My family and friends have been very helpful and supportive. I would not have been able to start this business without their support.
