Federal Trade Commission issues warning about identity theft

A tax-season warning from the Federal Trade Commission: Be on high alert for identity theft. If you get an email seeking personal or financial information that appears to be from the Internal Revenue Service, don’t respond. That agency never initiates contact with a taxpayer through email, social media or text messages; instead, it sends a letter through the mail. And it’s asking for the public’s help in finding potential scammers: “If you get an email that claims to be from the IRS,” the agency says, “do not reply or click on any links. Instead, forward it to phishing@irs.gov.”
