Job title and company: Elizabeth Martinez, co-owner and manager at Grub Sandwich Shop, 88 Pleasant St., Northampton

Age: 34

Your duties: Running a small restaurant has many duties, everything from managing staff and handling finances to replacing light bulbs and cleaning the windows. I focus primarily on managing front-of-house staff, day-to-day operations of the restaurant, such as reservations, money, restaurant supplies, etc. I also run the wine program at the restaurant and I am always on the lookout for a new exciting wine to offer our customers.

How did you land your job? A love of good food and restaurants plus a little bit of luck.

What’s most challenging about your work? The hours are long and I always take the job home with me. It can also be hard to put a smile on your face after a hard day.

What do you like about your job? Creating a warm and friendly atmosphere where people can feel at home and enjoy a delicious evening. I also enjoy having pride in the quality of the food we serve, and having someone tell me I was able to create a wonderful evening for them is always nice to hear.

What is your key to success? A good staff and a desire to succeed.

How do you feel the Valley economy will fare this year? Each year has been looking better and we hope to see that trend continue.

Why did you choose to do business in the Valley? I was raised here and had a hard time not coming back.

Who has helped mentor you professionally? My husband and business partner, Daniel Martinez.

Name a few of your goals for the coming year: To take a few more vacation days, to see my business stabilize even more, and to make more people happy by serving up local, made-from-scratch food.

Tell us a little-known fact about you: Before becoming a restaurateur, I was an analytical chemist.

What is your advice for others seeking business success? Personal devotion is key.
