In April, there will be some changes within the brown building at 213 Greenfield Road — its home for the past 10 years — where a life-size dinosaur figure rears its head.

Owners George P. Marchacos and his son, Adam Marchacos, have hired Deb Williams of New Hampshire to manage an expanding operation. The shop is undergoing renovations over the winter.

“It’s getting a face-lift. Expanding and improving,” Williams said.

Williams previously worked as the general manager at the Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves in northern New Hampshire.

The building will be enclosed to extend the shop’s season. It will be open full time April through October and will be able to stay open during Thanksgiving weekend and school vacations in December.

It will also continue to offer the mining, panning and digging activities it is known for.

Since the business opened in 1993, it has been popular for its dinosaur artifacts. The shop features fossils from Morocco and China, dinosaur eggs from China and gemstones from South America.

The owners hope to provide more hands-on education and community involvement.

“We are looking to go in a different direction,” Williams said. For instance, students studying geology and history in local schools could visit the shop to get an up-close look at what they are learning about, she said.

Other ideas include having students paint murals related to mining and dinosaurs for the shop and working with Boy Scout troops to help Scouts earn geology badges.

The shop will continue to sell rocks and fossils, but there will be more variety, Williams said.

“We’re hoping to provide a large audience with materials they might not be able to find without traveling,” she said.
