Hi 10° | Lo -11°

Larry Macari

Job title and company: CCM (Chief Cupcake Maker) at Queen Bee Cupcakery, Thornes Marketplace, 150 Main St., Northampton

Age: 20

Your duties: Baking, new product design and back-office computer work

How did you land your job? My father, Larry Macari, has been in the baking industry for over 28 years and asked me if I would like to partner with him on a cupcake project at Thornes Marketplace. I was very interested for many reasons, but the two that stand out are working with my father and seeing all that is involved in running a business.

What’s most challenging about your work? Setting our company apart. From our first day of opening our No. 1 goal was to offer only the finest cupcakes, specialty cakes and desserts the Valley has ever seen. I take it very seriously when a customer is choosing Queen Bee Cupcakery over another bakery to purchase a treat. We want the quality of our products to speak for themselves.

What do you like about your job? Most of all, working with my father. He is the hardest working person I know. He never gives up, no matter the challenge, and is a great role model.

What is your key to success? Quality, great service and pushing the bar for excellence in what we do. My father has always been great at building a strong team and I believe our retail customer service and manager are amazing.

How do you feel the Valley economy will fare this year? This is our first business in the Valley, so we have no idea. We hope for all small businesses that it is a good year.

Why did you choose to do business in the Valley? Thornes Marketplace has been that cool place to visit since I was little. I call it the place with the squeaky floors. So when the opportunity was presented to open a business there, we took it.

Who has helped mentor you professionally? Dad!

Name a few of your goals for the coming year: We would like to do more functions: weddings, bar mitzvahs and corporate catering. My father is a master cake decorator and I know that is his passion.

Tell us a little-known fact about you: I race motorcycles and love it.

What is your advice for others seeking business success? Be passionate and never ever give up.
