NAME: Kimberly Demerski
JOB TITLE: Owner/hairstylist, All About You A Salon, Northampton
WEBSITE: All About You A Salon/Facebook
WHEN THE BUSINESS STARTED: February 2012
WHAT YOU DO: All About You is a hair salon located at the Maplewood Shops in downtown Northampton. We specialize in all hair services and facial waxing.
EXPERIENCE: I have been a hairstylist for 21 years in the Northampton area. I attended Springfield Technical Community College and received a cosmetology degree. I was a hair stylist at Jennifer’s Hair Company in Northampton for 15 years. Then I worked at a couple other salons before opening All About You. I am also a Redken Specialist, Redken Master Specialist and was trained at the Redken Exchange in New York City.
THE MARKET: Men, women and children who are looking for a relaxing atmosphere to get pampered.
HOW YOU REACH OUT TO IT: I have done a small amount of local advertising. I find that I get most of my new clientele from word-of-mouth referrals. I am also lucky that past employers refer clients to me.
WHAT FINANCIAL HURDLES HAVE YOU FACED AND HOW HAVE YOU HANDLED THEM? Starting my business was my biggest financial hurdle. I wasn’t really prepared to start a business at the time. I fell into an opportunity to start my own salon that I couldn’t pass up. My family and friends helped me and gave me support. I also recycled furniture to give it a vintage feel.
KEY TO SUCCESS: I love my career! My personality, honesty, kindness and knowledge have a lot to do with my success. I have wanted to be a hairstylist for as long as I can remember. My hard work and determination have helped me get to this point in my life. I am also truly blessed by a supportive family. I also pride myself on making my clients feel heard, and as the sign reads, it’s All About You. Customer service is very important to me.
CHALLENGES: My number one challenge is saying no. I love what I do, so I work long days. I am trying really hard to balance family and work.
MISSTEP YOU LEARNED FROM: Business is business, it’s not personal. Sometimes I have a problem being the boss.
WHAT OTHERS COULD LEARN FROM YOU: Hard work, determination and believing in myself made me who I am. I was shy growing up and never had any confidence in myself. Wanting to start my own salon and making it happen gave me the confidence to make my dream a reality.
WHO HELPED MENTOR YOU PROFESSIONALLY: Jennifer Samolewicz from Jennifer’s Hair Company in Northampton was a wonderful mentor to me. She taught me everything she knew about the hair business. I also owe a great deal to my mother. I watched how hard she worked to give us the best life she could. She is an extremely strong woman, and I hope to be just like her. They both helped me gain the confidence to believe in myself.
TOP GOALS FOR 2013: To grow my business. I am remodeling a room to rent to other stylists, aestheticians, massage therapists and manicurists. I hope to add other services to accommodate my clients’ every beauty need.
ADVICE FOR OTHERS SEEKING BUSINESS SUCCESS: Believe in yourself and you will succeed. Get as much experience in your field as you can. Stay on top of the trends. Always research so you make smart choices the first time around.
PARTING THOUGHT: You don’t have to be rich to make your dreams come true. If you believe, you can make your dreams a reality.
