Scandihoovians planning return to Amherst
AMHERST — Scandihoovians, a retail shop focused on jewelry and clothing, is returning to downtown Amherst.
More than a year after closing its 25 South Pleasant St. location, the store, which also has a Northampton location, is returning to the community its owners, Laurie and Niels Christiansen, call their home. The plan is to rent the ground-level retail space in Boltwood Place.
Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tony Maroulis said he is happy to see the store’s return, marked by “coming soon” banners in the windows.
“We’re really excited. It’s great to have them back and good to have them in the Boltwood Place building,” Maroulis said.
Scandihoovians originally opened in Amherst in 2007 before closing in 2011. The Northampton store opened in 2004.
The five-story Boltwood Place was completed last year, but the retail space remained vacant. It was used as a studio for the Amherst Biennial outdoor art exhibition last fall, but that is it.
Maroulis said the Chamber and the Business Improvement District are both focused on promoting the area surrounding the Boltwood parking garage. Maroulis said the area includes long-standing restaurants like Thai Corner and Bueno y Sano and new ones such as Lit and White Hut, along with such businesses as Matt’s Barber Shop and Sei Bella Salon.
Adding retail there is good to diversify offerings, he said, as it is for the entire town center, which some have in the community have argued is becoming too restaurant top heavy.
“This is a good step in that direction,” Maroulis said.
