Forum Saturday aims to reach region’s farmers

Farmers from as many as 40 communities with agricultural commissions have been invited to the forum, an expanded version of a similar event held last year for Northampton farmers.

“The idea is to expose farmers to as many resources as are out there,” said Wayne Feiden, director of the city’s Office of Planning and Development.

Last year’s forum went so well that the city’s agricultural commission decided to broaden it to give farmers from throughout the region an opportunity to talk to each other and learn about local resources and vendors that are available to the farming community.

The forum will feature brief presentations from federal, state and private agencies and equipment and supply vendors, followed by individual break-out sessions for farmers who want more detail on a particular program.

These agencies and vendors will provide an overview of their organizations and how they assist the farming community and will include details about programs that provide technical and financial agricultural services. The forum will also include local equipment and supply vendors who will present their products.

The forum is sponsored by the Northampton Agricultural Commission, the Massachusetts Association of Agricultural Commissions and the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources.

It will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School, 80 Locust St.
