Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center at a glance
The Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center was created to allow universities to collaborate on societal and scientific challenges considered too big for any one of them to take on individually.
■ Its 10 megawatts of computing power is enough to power 5,000 to 10,000 homes.
■ The center can house up to 10,000 high-end computers and could expand by another 10,000.
■ The center should meet the research needs of its educational consortium for 5 to 10 years.
■ More than 70 percent of its electricity is powered by the Connecticut River through hydroelectric generation.
■ The building has energy efficient power distribution, advanced cooling techniques to minimize electricity use, has state-of-the-art power utilization efficiency, green landscaping and advanced storm water management.
■ The collaborative research enabled by the center will address questions in energy sciences, the environment and “green “computing.
