Longtime rep
leaves Gazette

Jim Foudy, Gazette publisher, said Conklin, of Northampton, will be missed as an employee and a valued colleague.

“Linda is always thinking about the best interests of the advertisers and the newspaper in general,” said Foudy. “She is always bringing forward story ideas, talking about ways to improve and promote the newspaper as well as better serve advertisers. She is a tireless worker and will be sorely missed.” Conklin started work at the Gazette in 1971 when the newspaper was located on Armory Street. She was hired by former owners and co-publishers Charles and Peter DeRose to take classified ads and eventually worked into the display ad department.

Charles DeRose described her as being “fiercely loyal” to the newspaper, its customers and her fellow employees.

Peter DeRose said she was a source of ideas for special sections, story ideas, advertising policy in general. “I always find her instincts — and more often than not her ideas — right on the button,” he said.

Adversising Director Patty Masure said: “ Linda treats everyone here and in the community like an extension of her own family and has always gone beyond what is expected of her professionally or personally.” Conklin will be on a leave starting mid-November and will be traveling to Florida for the winter with her husband, Gary. A retirement party for Conklin will be held early next year.
